Explorer Reports

This month we are learning more about the great European explorers.  The students have broken into groups and researched their explorer.

Notice the sticky notes.  Table teams did a "gallery walk" to see the other student's posters.  They noted their constructive criticism on these stickies.  This is the first experience we have had putting together posters.  Students are learning about colors, scale, gluing before they completely lay it all out, and working together.    We were missing a couple of explorer posters, so the students are learning about deadlines too.  I am pleased with their first attempt and I look forward to more projects.

Later this week, we will dress up like our explorer and present a "living museum" that we will record on our green screen.  (Look for that post soon.)  They will also present their knowledge in a Puppet Pals presentation using the IPads.  (Look for that soon too!)

Charming!!

Tarver School awards three different charms in Reading or Math for each quarter.

The first charm is the Exceeds.  It looks like this.
If you Meet the standards, you earn this one.
If you have made the required benchmark growth in Math or Reading, you earn this one.
Seventeen of my students earned one or more of these charms for their hard work.
These guys couldn't be more pleased to wear their new charms.  They can add on new charms as the school year progresses.  Way to go!!!

Tarver Day

Today our school celebrated Bret Tarver's Birthday with the annual parade.  The fifth grade honored Olympic heroes and their sacrifice, hard work, and never give up attitude.  Our class marched for para-olympic heroes.
Afterwards we were treated to amazing speakers.  We had a presentation from a migrant farm worker who put himself through college.  Then we heard from a true paralympic athlete from the Foundation for Blind Children.  Our speaker went blind as an adult but has managed to overcome his limitations and even climbed Kilimanjaro Mountain in Africa.  What an inspiration to us all.  Lastly, we watched an amazing juggler who had the children clapping and cheering.  It was all such fun!!
